Met Gala 2019: The Season’s Most Bold Fashion Moment

Ritualistically on every Monday of May, the New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts its annual Costume Institute Gala where fashion designers, artists, models, musicians and actors come together to celebrate art unveiling the fashion institute’s blockbuster exhibition. Year after year the Met Gala red carpet has owned a reputation for being the most anticipated and creatively diverse fashion moment of the season. The event is hosted and curated by the Vogue US editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour since 1995.

What is the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is an annual symphony of art, fashion, film, and music where the most renowned members of artistic industries come together for the museum’s latest exhibition launch.
Founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert, the gala dubbed as, “The Party of the Year” was first held in 1948 to encourage donations from New York’s high society for the Costume Institute.

What was this Year’s theme?

The Theme, "Camp: Notes On Fashion" was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay ‘Notes on ‘Camp’, which is widely credited to have introduced the notion of ‘Camp’ to the mainstream. The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural and of artifice and exaggeration.

The Fashion Pointers of 2019 Met Gala

Taking the love for the unnatural artifice to the couture, the celebrities lined up for over-the-top fashion parade wearing Brandon Maxwell, Moschino, Manfred Thierry Mugler, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, Versace, Gucci, The Blonds, August Getty Atelier, Erdem, Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and more. The exhibition showcased works of designers from Virgil Abloh to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Rei Kawakubo, Mugler, Bob Mackie, Karl Lagerfeld and the Viktor & Rolf slogan couture gowns, fresh off the runway.

Ø  The Outrageous Fashion Icon Lady Gaga retaining her charm arrived at Met Gala in four different looks by Brandon Maxwell, which she alternately shed and donned as part of a playful routine performance that included a wagon full of champagne, dancers, umbrellas and a flirty striptease.
Ø  Billy Porter confirmed his red carpet reign carried in on a black velvet and gold litter by six chiseled and shirtless bearers with a regal, opulent look from The Blonds that appeared to be inspired by a sun deity. The outfit consisted of an embellished catsuit, 10-ft wings and a 24-karat gold headpiece.
Ø  Continuing to deliver camp look every year no matter the theme, Katy Perry appeared in a literal ‘lit’ chandelier look. Dressed in Moschino designed by Jeremy Scott she managed to become an embodiment of a chandelier herself.

Ø  Joan Collins channeled her iconic looks on Dynasty and showed up in a voluminous white feathered gown by Valentino designer Pierpaolo Piccioli.
Ø  Jared Leto dressed in Gucci carried the most bizarre accessory of the brand’s Milan fashion week collection of the year. He toted along a replica of his own head to pair with his rich red Gucci ensemble and crystal harness.
Ø  Hamish Bowles brought the drama with a magnificent Maison Margiela cape to the camp. The cape edged with multi-colored feathers featuring a pattern that made him look like a psychedelic dandy was a style concept that was driven home with his rainbow-colored hairstyle. Adding to the ‘cape’-town was Ryan Murphy dressed in crystal and pearl embellished Christian Siriano cape of a warm rose gold shade and Florence Welch in a fantasy dragon-inspired embellished Gucci cape.
Ø  Celine Dion upped the ante with a towering, spiky headpiece coupled with a metallic fringed romper by Oscar de la Renta. Reportedly the look is made up of 18 panels that were hand-beaded by 52 master embroiderers over the course of over 3,000 hours. The final piece weighs over 22 pounds.
Ø  Following the headpiece game, Janelle Mona channeled her mad hatter vibe wearing multiple hats reflecting her multiple talents as being a singer, songwriter, actress and producer in a surrealist Christian Siriano ensemble completed with ‘eye’ accessory.

Ø  Ezra Miller’s surrealist dandy look of Burberry by Riccardo Tisci, drew all eyes on him quite literally, drawing to mind the work of Dali, Man Ray and Magritte. On somewhat a similar note, Michael Urie’s whimsical Christian Siriano look showcased the duality within us all.
Other than these, worth mentioning are Cara Delevingne in Christian Dior, Amy Fine Collins in Thom Browne, Violet Chachki in Moschino by Jeremy Scott, Zendaya in Tommy Hilfiger, Lupita Nyong’o in Versace, Julia Garner in Zac Posen, Sophie von Haselberg and Bette Midler in Michael Kors, Cardi B in Thom Browne, Winnie Harlow in Tommy Hilfiger, Priyanka Chopra in Dior Haute Couture and Gigi Hadid in custom Michael Kors.
